Zoom Event: Sancturary Sea Stars Brunch

Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and former Santa Cruz Mayor Hilary Bryant, serving as Co-Chairs of the Board of Trustees of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, will be presenting the Sea Star Awards at the Foundation’s second annual Sea Stars Brunch, a virtual fundraising event from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM (PST) on Sunday, December 6, 2020 via Zoom. Tickets will be donation-based. Participants can register to attend at: https://montereybayfoundation.org/event/2020-sea-stars-brunch/.

The program will include an address by keynote speaker, Haben Girma, who will discuss her time surfing in Monterey Bay. Girma is the first Deafblind person to graduate from Harvard Law School, and is a human rights lawyer advancing disability justice. President Obama named her a White House Champion of Change. She received the Helen Keller Achievement Award, a spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, and TIME100 Talks. President Bill Clinton, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Chancellor Angela Merkel have all honored Girma. Girma believes disability is an opportunity for innovation, and she teaches organizations the importance of choosing inclusion. The New York Times, Oprah Magazine, and TODAY Show featured her memoir, “Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law.”

The event will also premier the Sanctuary Foundation’s short-film, feature an online auction, and a pre-party cocktail demonstration. Funds raised by the Foundation in 2020 will support Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary outreach programs, Bay Net and Team OCEAN, which work to increase public awareness about the sanctuary and to protect marine species and the places they call home. They will also support the Whale Entanglement Team who work to disentangle whales caught up in discarded lines, ropes, pots and anchors, as well as to prevent whale entanglements. “Our vision is a healthy Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, recognized as a national treasure for its unique and abundant biodiversity, and widespread community support. This Sanctuary Sea Stars Brunch is the celebration of those community efforts and it’s a lot of fun!” says Chapter Director Ginaia Kelly.

The awardees for 2020 will be: Research, Dr. Jim Barry, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute; Resource Protection: Cowell Beach Working Group; Education and Outreach, Mary Alice Fettis, Fisherman’s Wharf Association and Chair, WhaleFest Monterey; Business and Tourism: Dream Inn; and the Panetta Sea Star Award will go to Mark Silberstein, Executive Director of the Elkhorn Slough Foundation.
