Spring Exhibition: Reuben Kadish: Classic and Surreal at the Monterey Museum of Art

Reuben Kadish (1913 – 1992) grew up in Los Angeles, California and was dedicated to the visual arts from a young age. During his prolific career he befriended such acclaimed artists as Philip Guston and Jackson Pollock, and his oeuvre reveals an interest in many artistic media, including mural painting, graphic art, and sculpture – all of which will be represented in his new show at the Monterey Museum of Art. His work demonstrates a passion for the classical forms of the Renaissance in conjunction with avant-garde Surrealism which allowed him to express the horrors of World War II, and his anxiety about the escalating international arms race and domestic social unrest. His contribution to the arts of the twentieth century as well as his influence as a teacher at Cooper Union in New York has established a legacy that few artists ever achieve.
