Monterey Museum of Art Announces Paz de la Calzada Artist-in-Residence
The Monterey Museum of Art is pleased to announce the next installment of MMA’s Artist-in-Residency program featuring native Spanish artist, Paz de la Calzada.
Paz de la Calzada Artist-in-Residence
Monterey Museum of Art La Mirada Cultural Center and Pacific Street Galleries
September 4 – 21, 2019, Public Open Days TBA
Bucolica Installation on view at Pacific Street Galleries September 6 – December 31, 2019
From September 4 – 21, Paz de la Calzada will be in residence at Monterey Museum of Art La Mirada Cultural Center. The artist will create an installation in the stairway at MMA Pacific Street, host interactive workshops, play a creative role in the Museum’s annual Ferment Event, and open her studio to visitors during her time in Monterey.
As part of her residency, Paz de la Cazada will produce Bucolica, a multidisciplinary art project consisting of a site-specific installation and a vitrine displaying personal related objects. Inspired by the Bucolic genre, this work reflects the artist’s journey to rediscover the values of Romanticism and the notion that the landscape embodies a certain state of emotive consciousness meant to inspire awe and reflection
Using mass-produced re-purposed artificial grass, the hand cut pieces of the installation feature the Monterey Cypress, a traditional, romanticized, and exaggerated example of the local landscape. Leaves and needles of this tree have been used by the artist to make an infused oil and she will continue to create an urban apothecary during her Residency. By engaging in “wildcrafting”, the artist acknowledges the necessity of respect and reciprocity between humans and the natural world.
Bucolica calls attention to the compromised relationship we currently have with the landscape, and questions the uses of synthetic grass as a substitute for real and sustainable local grasses, highlighting the powerful capacity of art making to transform discarded banal waste into a playful eco-friendly creation.
Paz de la Calzada, a native of Spain, is an artist working in drawing, installation, and public art. She received a BFA at the University of Salamanca, Spain, and an MFA at UNAM, Mexico City. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally, including at the de Young and YBCA in San Francisco, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Union Fenosa Museum and the Fundacion Caixa Galicia in Spain, and the Leon Trotsky Museum in Mexico City.
The Artist-in-Residence program is designed to provide an opportunity for creative growth for national and international artists, scholars, educators, and writers through the rich beauty and resources of the Monterey Bay area. It also seeks to cultivate the local cultural through the exchange of new perspectives, ideas, and aesthetics.
