The Zia sun symbol has become an international icon associated with the pride and prestige of the state of New Mexico. The Zia sun is seen everywhere, from commercial planes flown across the United States to tattoos proudly displayed as a badge of honor. Yet, do we know the true origin of the Zia symbol and its original meaning? This exhibit will take you through the journey of the symbol’s origin in Zia Pueblo to its commodification that continues to grow in popularity, analyzing the question of ownership.
