“David Hockney’s Yosemite” Exhibition at The Monterey Museum of Art

Celebrating its 60th Anniversary Season, the Monterey Museum of Art announces “David Hockney’s Yosemite” featuring the work of iconic artist David Hockney inspired by his visits to Yosemite National Park.

EXHIBITION
“David Hockney’s Yosemite”
Monterey Museum of Art Pacific Street
April 25 – August 4, 2019

Making his inaugural debut on the Monterey Peninsula, this exhibition will feature iPad drawings made by David Hockney during visits to Yosemite National Park in 2010 and 2011. The show will highlight the artist’s continuing engagement with nature and landscape and will focus on his special relationship with the American West. In addition, the Monterey exhibition will feature photo collages from the artist’s personal collection made in response to previous visits to Yosemite between 1982 and 2010.

David Hockney’s Yosemite” explores the relationship between art, nature, and technology. Hockney was first attracted to the iPad for its portability for working en plein air and its ability to capture the luminosity of his subjects in a manner unrivaled by other media. He created his first extended series of drawings on the iPad during three trips to Yosemite in the summer and fall of 2010. These drawings were exhibited numerous times on iPads and digital monitors in galleries and museums around the world before the artist decided to print a limited edition of the drawings.

MMA’s exhibition will include interactive iPad kiosks. Visitors will have the opportunity to create their own iPad drawings inspired by Hockney’s interpretations of Yosemite. This hands on addition will allow visitors to further explore the intersection of art and technology and give them the creative tools to embrace technological art in their own practice.

The works to be displayed were generously lent to the Monterey Museum of Art by the David Hockney Foundation and the artist. This exhibition was made possible by the generous support of the Arts Council for Monterey County – thanks to support from the Monterey County Board of Supervisors.
