On Granville Island

Nestled in the heart of Vancouver's artistic and cultural hub, Granville Island, is where you will find the Eagle Spirit Gallery, where land, sea and beautiful art come together.
Eagle Spirit Gallery has been showcasing and promoting the work of the First Nations People for close to 20 years and its recent expansion has allowed it to become the largest Canadian native gallery in the city. Its museum-like setting provides visitors from around the globe the opportunity to view some of the finest Northwest Coast and Inuit art in the country.
Being of aboriginal descent, the director has always focused his vision on promoting the history and culture of the First Nations People through the art by supporting and celebrating it in a socially and environmentally conscious manner, as this is the cultural tradition of the People.
The gallery boasts an impressive collection of Northwest Coast art including hand carved masks, totem poles, bentwood boxes, panels, argillite carvings, original paintings, button blankets and baskets. Each piece is uniquely handcrafted using contemporary forms and materials reflective of traditional creation.
Northwest Coast artists include: Robert Davidson, Susan Point, Francis Horne Sr, Moy Sutherland, Carl Stromquist, Junior Henderson and Sammy Dawson, many of whom are currently working on large projects for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
In addition to the art of the West Coast of British Columbia, the gallery also has an extensive collection of breathtaking stone sculptures from the Arctic. An array of dancing bears, walruses, muskoxen, loons and transformation pieces adorn every corner as well as a myriad of Inukshuks, the symbol for the 2010 Olympics.
Inuit artists include: Axangayuk Shaa, Nuna Parr, Toonoo Sharky, Kiawak Ashoona, Kaniganak Pootoogook and Rodney Kolausok.
Eagle Spirit Gallery and the artists it represents have provided artwork for various shows and exhibits including the Museum of Art and Design New York, the Smithsonian Museums in New York and Washington D.C, Fortnum and Mason in London, England, the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Museum of Civilization.
