VC09 - West Point Grey

Vancouver - Annual 2009

Beautiful homes, driftwood-strewn beaches, and sweeping views of English Bay make this one of Vancouver’s most exclusive neighbourhoods. Up 10th Avenue, west of Alma, a mix of mom-and-pops, upscale boutiques, and comfortable bistros cater to discerning locals and UBC students.

Mix the Bakery
Graham Winterbottom

The ovens at Mix the Bakery heat up the open-concept room, making it very hard to leave (or snag a table) on a drizzly day. The fruit-crammed breads are drive-across-town good. Pick up the cranberry-ginger-citrus loaf; it’s perfect on its own or with a slice of old white Cheddar. 4430 W. 10th Ave., 604-221-4145.

Take in the city from the best vantage point: a sandy beach with a hibachi, blanket, and bocce set. Half of the city’s 10 beaches are here, running from the north end of Wallace Street westward to the Spanish Banks extension along NW Marine Dr. Vancouver.ca/parks

Tenth & Proper stocks pretty tailored clothing from local labels like Dace and Allison Wonderland, alongside basics from house line ProperTy. Delicate pendants and earrings by Simply Sublime are the perfect complement. 4483 W. 10th Ave., 604-222-1115.

Stunning First Nations and local art, an intimate room, and a well-considered, local, seasonal, mostly organic menu — for an introduction to West Coast cuisine look no further than Pair Bistro. 3763 W. 10th Ave., 604-224-7211.

Some things change; The Diner is not one of them. Since 1959, legendary owner Stella Shurety has been serving trad British fare (haddock and chips, all-day breakfast). She’ll insist you clean your plate. 4556 W. 10th Ave., 604-224-1912.

Moricotta looks like a well-kept kitchen cupboard — all heavy Le Creuset and Staub tableware, La Cucina soaps, and Irish linen tea towels. Brightly coloured French and Italian pottery is the main attraction, lining the shop’s east and west walls and suited to al fresco dining. 4429 W. 10th Ave., 604-224-7196.

Burgoo has mastered comfort food, ladling stick-to-your-ribs stews, fondues, and soups in a comfy lodgelike room. 4434 W. 10th Ave., 604-221-7839.

Enflux occupies the retail space in the stunning Roar_one building, and the selective inventory suits the surrounds: glassware by littala, kitchen accessories by Alessi, and spare jewellery and home accents by Georg Jensen. 4385 W. 10th Ave., 604-222-9009.

If there’s one neighbourhood staple, it’s the DKNY cozy. Find it at Enda B, which stocks an extensive inventory of the label’s clothing, shoes, and accessories, plus the latest from Steilmann, Part Two, and Michael Kors, among others. 4346 W. 10th Ave., 604-228-1214.
