VC08 - Kitsilano

Vancouver - Annual 2008

Before it was developed in the 1930s and ’40s, Kits was a forested beach area where affluent West End residents came to camp in the balmy summers. Now fully built-out — and among the city’s most exclusive neighbourhoods — it still has that same laid-back beach vibe.

VC08 - Kitsilano

Orb (#1) Orb’s new flagship store stocks sporty skater-girl basics like hoodies, fitted tees, and wide-leg cropped pants — just in time for beach season. 2028 W. Fourth Ave., 604-568-6720.

Stepback (#2) This aptly named shop is devoted to all things nostalgic. The inventory is a mix of vintage odds and sods (’60s rec-room glassware, school notebooks) and new items designed to look vintage — you may not be able to tell the difference. 3026 W. Broadway, 604-731-7525.

Gravity Pope (#3) (2205 W. Fourth Ave., 604-731-7673) is Vancouver’s best shoe store, full stop: find that perfect pair of stilettos, wedges, kneehigh boots, clogs, mules, or sandals, plus an unequaled selection of men’s and kids’ shoes. Nextdoor companion Gravity Pope Tailored Goods (2203 W. Fourth Ave., 604-731-7647) is an impeccably curated boutique that stocks forward-looking labels for men and women. For spring/summer, hunt out the latest offerings from Paul Smith, Hazel Brown, Tocca, Tara Jarmon, and Hugo Boss Orange.

Ray Rickburn (#4) Shopping for menswear simplified: go for preppy separates from Tiger of Sweden, well-tailored jackets from New York’s G-Star, and the city’s best selection of Penguin and Fred Perry. 2100 W. Fourth Ave., 604-738-9177.

Moulé (#5) This trend-setting lifestyle store has a stylish kids’ section on the lower level — love the Lucy and Michael tepees! ($475) — and designer home accents and apparel for men and women on the second. There are too many finds to list, but here’s a sampling: bowls by Michael Aram, coats from Kico Kids, buttery-soft leather clutches from Lauren Merkin, and — for the men — very reasonably priced jackets from Spiewak ($168). 1994 W. Fourth Ave., 604-732- 4066.

49th Parallel Roasters (#6) The Piccolo brothers supply their top-quality roasts to the city’s best cafés (including their former chainlet, Caffè Artigiano) and serve them here at their signature spot. Local star pâtissier Thomas Haas supplies the pastries. 2152 W. Fourth Ave., 604-420-4901.

Bistrot Bistro (#7) At Bistrot Bistro, refined but never fussy French dishes are served in an equally unfussy space; the mood is like that of a neighbourhood dinner party. Crêpes Suzette ($7) are practically compulsory. 1961 W. Fourth Ave., 604-732-0004.

Sand Lifestyle (#8) South Beach meets West Coast is how the owners describe this lifestyle boutique, located just steps from Kits Beach. 2202 Cornwall Ave., 604-733-4818.

Duthie Books on Fourth (#9) The last of Bill Duthie’s bookstores turned 50 last year, with its neighbourhood-library spirit still intact. The adjacent courtyard is the perfect place to read local magazines and art and architecture books found here. 2239 W. Fourth Ave., 604-732-5344.
