VC08 - Kerrisdale

Vancouver - Annual 2008

Stately Homes, streets lined with shag-bark maple trees, a shopping row that serves the locals — this area still has traces of its small-town roots.

VC08 - Kerrisdale

Secret Garden Tea Company (#1) High tea is served thrice daily in the traditional style: quaint room, teapots dressed in cozies, and three-tiered trays of mini sandwiches, sweets, and scones — with the requisite jam and Devonshire cream. Most notable is the tea menu itself, which lists more than 40 custom blends. Reservations are recommended. 5559 West Blvd., 604-261-3070.

Bean Bros (#2) Breakfast is available from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nothing flashy; just the reliable two eggs any style with toast, hash browns, choice of bacon or sausage, and a cup of fair-trade organic Bean Bros coffee ($7.95). 2179 W. 41st Ave., 604-266-2185.

Quilchena Park (#3) True, it’s outside the official neighbourhood boundaries by a few blocks. But it’s worth the walk for its stellar views of the Coast Mountains and acres of picnic terrain — great playground equipment for the kids, too. W. 33rd Ave., one block east of Arbutus St.

Hills of Kerrisdale (#4) The venerable, fashion-forward clothing store owned by Vancouver’s first family of retail (the Hills are also behind Blue Ruby, Ray Rickburn, Aritzia, and TNA) is a Kerrisdale institution. 2125 W. 41st Ave., 604-266-9177.

The Velvet Room Boutique (#5) This mother-and-daughter-owned shop carries Canadian-made beauty products and apparel. Look for Coral Moon, the store’s in-house line of jewellery. 2248 W. 41st Ave., 604-264-8664.

Benton Brothers Fine Cheese (#6) Andrew and Jonah Benton have streamlined the old Forster’s Cheese shop, replacing yellowed maps with chalkboards detailing the latest arrivals. Great artisanal and raw-milk cheeses, plus wel-lchosen accoutrements. 2104 W. 41st Ave., 604-261-5813.
