Vancouver - Annual 2007

Once a decaying industrial zone, its reimagined warehouses now house designer boutiques and high-end restaurants — and conspicuous consumption is standard procedure.

DO: Westcoast Hot Yoga

Put that Lululemon gear to good use and drop in for a class at the modern and airy Westcoast Hot Yoga studio (1128 Mainland St., 604-221-9642).

SEE: Barking Babies

Purse-size dogs are the hottest accessories for Yaletown residents, and Barking Babies (1188 Homer St., 604-647-2275) is the mothership. “Hug” baby slings for dogs, to-go packs of pooch-friendly “sushi” rolls, Juicy Couture carry bags — if you can imagine it, they’ve probably got it.

BUY: Taylorwood Wines

Taylorwood Wines (1185 Mainland St., 604-408-9463) sells only B.C. bottles — bring home a bottle of Joie’s delicious, perfect-for-sipping-on-a-patio rosé.

SHOP: Basquiat

Don’t be surprised to see a burly man or two browsing the racks of this carefully edited designer boutique — Basquiat (1189 Hamilton St., 604-688-0828) is co-owned by Cristina Linden, wife of former Vancouver Canucks captain (and unofficial mayor of Vancouver) Trevor Linden.

EAT: Brix Restaurant

The greenery-draped courtyard at Brix (1138 Homer St., 604-915-9463) is one of the city’s most romantic outdoor dining rooms. Keep the party going at adjoining George Ultra Lounge, a favourite romp room for visiting celebs.

Editor’s Choice: Vancouver by bike

Though the city itself offers some challenging hills for cyclists, the seawall — the pride and joy of many a Vancouverite — is an easy, relatively flat and paved track that’s made for a chill ride around the city. Now in its second year of operation, Vancouver By Cycle offers daily tours of the seawall, starting at Stanley Park and making their way through Yaletown and on down to the Aquabus — where bikes are shuttled on board — to get over to Granville Island. Participants cruise around the island on their own time, and then the whole gang heads downtown again. Hosts provide the colour commentary along the way — make sure to get the scoop on Gastown’s steam clock. $69 for adults (includes bike and helmet rental). 604-730-1032.
