Vancouver - Annual 2007

In Vancouver's city centre, urban professionals dodge the crowds shopping Robson Street, and rabble-rousers navigate the theatres, pubs and dance clubs of the Granville Street thoroughfare.

EAT: Ocean 6 Seventeen

Slightly off the well-worn False Creek path, Ocean 6 Seventeen (617 Stamps Landing, 604-879-6178) is a pocket-size room with a large patio, offering modern takes on classic seafood preps — like slow-cooked sablefish with pumpkinseed gratin, squash and smoked tuna broth.

SHOP: Oyama Sausage

The finest charcuterie plates in dining rooms across the city source their cured meats from Oyama Sausage (17-1689 Johnston St., 604-327-7407), where owner John van der Leick serves a carnivorous feast of housemade sausages, pâtés and terrines — the wild mushroom and truffle oil paté is heaven.

BUY: Granville Island Art

Granville Island is home to a number of artisan studios. Look for Renata Crowe’s jewellery at New-Small and Sterling Studio Glass (1440 Old Bridge St., 604- 681-6730) — she recently received a Creative Achievement award from the British Columbia government.

EAT: Go Fish

Check out Go Fish (1505 W. 1st Ave., 604-730-5040), a seafood shack at Fisherman’s Wharf that offers whatever is fresh from the docks: salmon tacos, oyster po-boys and the city’s best fish and chips.

DRINK: Osake Sake Studio

Sandwiched among a goldsmith, a potter and a textile artist is Osake (1339 Railspur Alley, 604-685-7253), Canada’s first artisan sake studio. Sample the three bottles on offer from the studio’s limited production at the tasting bar up front.
