West End

Vancouver - Annual 2005

Leafy streets and beach paths meet urban living in downtown Vancouver’s West End.

West End

Beautiful old homes are nestled between high-rises in the West End, one of the most densely populated communities in North America. The neighbourhood is a gem: situated to the west of downtown’s central business district between Burrard Street and Stanley Park, the West End acts as an all-access gateway to the waterfront and the park, with its shaded walkways and endless trails for biking, running and in-line skating.

The population of this area, also the heart of the city’s gay community, is on average younger than the rest of the city: 50 percent of residents are between 20 and 40. Playing host to a number of Vancouver’s civic celebrations in the summer months (Pride Parade and the Celebration of Light, to name two), this neighbourhood is also popular with locals for its culturally diverse and (even better) affordable eateries.

Treat yourself to an unforgettable dining experience at one of the West End’s many Japanese izakaya restaurants (tapas-style eateries) or Korean barbecue houses, and finish with a cupcake from Cupcakes on Denman Street (yes, it is all they sell).

EAT:

A seasonal three-course prix fixe menu on the leafy patio at Parkside, on the bottom floor of the quaint Buchan Hotel. The menu champions local ingredients and offers great value-formoney; the room (indoors and out) is one of the most romantic settings in the city (1906 Haro St., 604-683-6912).

DRINK:

The infamous tequila Caesar at the lowbrow Bayside Lounge, with its highbrow panoramic views of English Bay (1755 Davie St., 604-682-1831).

BROWSE:

BeautyMark, a cosmetics wonderland for product addicts. Don't miss their amazing selection of locally designed jewellery (991 Denman St., 604-688-7407).

Every neighbourhood in Vancouver is as unique as the people who live there. Take a stroll around a few: it's the best way to see the heart of the city and the people who love it.
