Sala Thai

A GuestLife Vancouver
Great Restaurant

With its name evocative of a cool luxurious gazebo fit for a king, SalaThai is indeed a culinary oasis in the heart of Vancouver. Since 1987, Bangkok-born proprietor Joy Kongsilp has hosted devotees of fine Thai cuisine at her Cambie Street location near City Hall, and in 2003 she brought her award-winning fare to the downtown core. While her 100-seat Cambie restaurant remains a neighbourhood dinner-time favourite, the new SalaThai, located mere steps from bustling Robson Street and open from 11:30 ‘till 10:00 in spring and summer, plays host to both the business crowd and myriad tourists, serving up the succulent, nutritious dishes of Joy’s childhood.

The welcoming 200-seat space is furnished in comfortable upholstered teak and rattan, with walls and display tables decorated by museum-quality artwork from the countryside of Thailand. Colourful mobiles and an old Bangkok rickshaw lend an air of authentic festiveness. The recently renovated bar area now plays host to midafternoon shoppers and early moviegoers, who sample from a new menu of appetizers and light dishes available from 2:30 until 5:00.

Like the room itself, Joy envisioned a new and expanded menu that would build on her reputation for exotic, healthy fare, and to this end she recruited talented chefs from five-star hotels. Working with the freshest of ingredients delivered by local suppliers, enhanced by such speciality items as lemongrass, fish sauce, lemon leaf and basil, flown in from Thailand, they can cater to the most sophisticated palates. At the same time, SalaThai is perfectly attuned to the growing appetite for lowfat, organic and vegetarian cuisine.

SalaThai’s offerings have already won accolades from discerning diners. In its first year on Burrard, the restaurant was runner-up in the Georgia Straight’s Golden Plate Award for Best Thai. Joy is also honoured to have catered to members of the Thai royal family on their visits to Vancouver since 1988. She is proud that in 2004 the Prime Minister of Thailand bestowed one of his five PM Export Awards on SalaThai, in recognition of Joy Kongsilp’s outstanding performance in bringing Thai products and services to the world at large. Vancouver’s food lovers are fortunate that she chose to make her new home here.
