“My painting is what I have to give back to the world for what the world gives to me” — Georgia O’Keeffe
A GuestLife New Mexico Great Gallery
Georgia O’Keeffe was first attracted to New Mexico when she visited Santa Fe in 1917, and saw the area’s astonishing desert landscapes.
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, located an hour southeast of the landscape areas O’Keeffe cherished most (Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu), is dedicated to perpetuating American Modernism (1890s-present). The Museum houses the largest collection of O’Keeffe's work (over 50 percent of her lifetime output) and continues to attract devotees and new enthusiasts from all across the globe who wish to view the work of this amazing artist. The Museum also presents three specially organized exhibits annually, which might consist of only O’Keeffe’s work, or O’Keeffe’s work long with work of her contemporaries, or only works by her contemporaries, or works by artists considered to be living artists of distinction.
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum also maintains the artist’s Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu houses. To the extent possible, the Abiquiu house remains as she left it in 1984, when she moved from Abiquiu to Santa Fe, where she died in 1986. Public tours are available, on a limited basis, for small groups to visit the house and studio where O’Keeffe created some of her most famous paintings.
In addition to the Museum and O’Keeffe’s houses, the Museum is proud to have the only museum-related research facility in the world dedicated to the study of American Modernism (1890spresent). Through its annual, competitive scholarship program, this interdisciplinary center sponsors research in the fields of art history, architectural history and design, literature, music, and photography.
