New Mexico - Annual 2007

Welcome to this enchanting land — New Mexico. Within our borders, you'll find a rich mix of Native American, Hispanic, and Wild West cultures that have shared this space for hundreds of years. Join in the fiestas and experience the markets and fairs throughout the year to celebrate our heritage: Age-old Pueblo dances, mariachi music and flamenco dancing, mountain man fairs, and rodeos reveal our state's magic.

New Mexico is the fifth largest state, and it has a diverse and wonderful landscape to share. From spectacular gypsum dunes of White Sands, to mountain ranges and wilderness offering fresh air and freedom for recreation, the life-giving Rio Grande that flows from north to south through it all, and the other worldly volcanic landscapes of badlands, this is a place that invites exploration. Go underground to view the amazing hidden world of Carlsbad Caverns or hike to the top of our highest mountain, Wheeler Peak (13,161 feet).

Dinosaurs once roamed this land, and you can see their fossils and statues at museums and follow in their tracks at Clayton Lake State Park. World-class archaeological sites like Chaco Canyon and Bandelier National Monument showcase ruins from ancient cultures and Albuquerque's Petroglyph National Monument preserves thousands of designs etched onto boulders by early inhabitants.

New Mexico is also focused on the future with the proposed SpaceportAmerica to be built between Truth or Consequences and Las Cruces. The worl'’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport will be anchored by Virgin Galactic, with spaceships set to carry tourists into space on sub-orbital flights by 2010.

The quality of light in New Mexico draws artists and photographers and art flourishes in our state. Enjoy our museums, galleries, shops and art markets — you'll find contemporary and traditional art in many cultural expressions.

Treat yourself to memorable meals of New Mexico's complex and fiery cuisine and discover our local wines and beers. The flavors of our food and drink will sustain you in your explorations.

Welcome and enjoy your adventures!
