Rare, Old-World Treasures in Cannery Row

Relocated to Monterey’s famed Cannery Row after a 35-year tenure on Ocean Avenue in Carmel, the store is a full-service interior design center. Owners Carl and Dennis Williamson search the countries of Europe for antiques and curiosities from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. The ever-changing showroom offers buffets, armoires, desks, dining tables, and chairs along with an exciting mixture of new and antique accessories.

Despite their rarity, the antiques are competitively priced when compared to modern furnishings, and are in fine, restored condition, allowing the items’ rich patina to speak of the storied past. Because the fixtures are old and rare, their value increases.

The Williamsons enjoy discovering wondrous finds to bring into their store, like the Pannetiere — French for bread bin — made of cherry wood, found on a farm in the South of France dating from the 1700s.

Another is the spectacular long refectory table, the kind that would have graced a monastery, also dating from the 18th century, acquired in the French provincial cathedral town of Avignon.

Such items show astounding workmanship. It was an era when quality was an obsession, when to be a master carver was an exalted profession, and when the time to complete a project was no object.

The firm is also a retailer of modern Tiffany-style lamps done by a noted California artist. Great Things Home is proud to feature the Pearson line of upholstered furniture, Casa Fina Tableware, Agraria boutique home fragrances, bejeweled picture frames by L’Objet, recycled alabaster glass, Stonewall kitchen delicacies, and an interesting line of gift books to name a few.
