Conway of Asia

Monterey Bay - Annual 2008

A Crossroads of Many Civilizations — Est. 1966

Monterey Bay's By Design

Conway of Asia is reminiscent of the great souks that once flourished along the fabled Silk Route. It is abundantly filled with a sensual array of collector-quality carpets, centuries-old artifacts, icons, magnificent Buddhist and Hindu statuary, antique Tibetan monastic furniture, architectural masterpieces in iron, wood and stone; doors, windows, columns and carvings, elegant jewelry, and textiles that offer an intriguing glimpse into the people, culture and artistry of the mystical and exotic world of the Far East.

Journeying thousands of miles over land and sea, across religious and cultural lines, through difficult customs and import barriers, from ancestral hiding places in remote villages, discovered amid the splendid offerings in mystical bazaars beneath the shadows of ancient temples, the riches of another time, another place, and another people wind their way to Carmel. They finally arrive, delivered into the same hands that so wisely selected them from the rapidly vanishing treasure troves of Russia, Iran, Tibet, Nepal, India and most recently Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.

Conway of Asia is a subdued, rich atmosphere that highlights the beauty of the unique treasures that grace this elegant gallery, which has enchanted collectors and connoisseurs for more than 40 years. Peterson Conway’s passion for rugs and antiques and a lifetime of devotion to the arts of ancient cultures has made Conway of Asia one of Carmel’s most exciting destinations. Joined with its knowledgeable design and appraisal services is an expert preservation and restoration staff essential to the care and protection of fine oriental rugs and antiques.

Peterson Conway’s fascination with the East began in the great ethnographic museums of Europe and during his service in the Peace Corps, he developed a deep love, understanding, and profound respect for the people of Asia. Seeking to preserve and celebrate their culture through their art, he began bringing their treasures into the United States, eventually opening his first store in Carmel.
