The West Coast’s Premier Art Colony.
Monterey became the epicenter of Northern California art after the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. Artists from the city came to the peninsula in a wave that ultimately helped the economy and refined the area’s reputation as an early California artist colony. Today, you can find masterworks of early California Impressionism in the galleries of Carmel, as well as in the Monterey Museum of Art. The art scene here also boasts galleries that specialize in contemporary landscapes, Modern masters, and even some Pop art.
