MB09 — Moss Landing

Monterey Bay - Annual 2009

Where antique hounds, gourmands, and environmentalists come to find their bliss.

Moss Landing, California

The towering smoke stacks of Moss Landing's power plant stand like two sentinels at this village and mark the spot of this little fishing town on Highway 1. This enclave has more than a dozen antique shops like Camelot By the Sea, with its shabby chic linens, country tin ware, and lamps.

Moss Landing boasts many artists in residence — painters, sculptors, jewelers, photographers, fashion designers, and crafts people — and you can often see them at work in their shops and studios on Moss Landing Road.

Stella Page Design studio is now located in Moss Landing. There, Stella designs extraordinary handbags for Stella Page collectors like Angelina Jolie, Demi Moore, Goldie Hawn, Jada Pinkett Smith, Maria Shriver, and Salma Hayek. Each Stella Page Design is a numbered, limitededition work of art with a certificate of authenticity.

For the hungry, Moss Landing has critically acclaimed restaurants — some of which purchase their seafood directly from local commercial fishermen. Phil’s Fishery Market & Eatery has a fresh fish market attached to its restaurant and serves an extensive list of fresh seafood, including his Ciopinno, made famous by Sunset magazine and the Food Network. Enjoy Mexican seafood at the Whole Enchilada, where you’ll find tasty seafood enchiladas and some of the best margaritas on the peninsula. Next door, Moss Landing Jazz Club serves up a full bar and live music. Moss Landing Cafe menu offers fish for breakfast and scrumptious burgers for lunch. For Thai cuisine, fresh seafood, and French-influenced desserts, try Lemon Grass Restaurant and Bar at the south end of town.

One of the best ways to experience Moss Landing is by boat. Elkhorn Slough Safari offers a fun, high-quality, and relaxing guided pontoon boat nature tour.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is world renowned for its wildlife. When you explore the bay by boat, you’ll see everything from seabirds to whales to turtles to jellyfish. Sanctuary Cruises provides year-round whale watching from Moss Landing’s A Dock and special charters in the marine sanctuary, all on Coast Guard-approved vessels.

For expert-level surfers, the “Landing” has one of California’s best beach breaks. And when the sun goes down, visitors and locals gather at the Moss Landing Inn for music and great cocktails.
