The local fish from the Monterey Bay can be one of the culinary pleasures of visiting the area, but please think before you place your order. Increasing demand for seafood throughout the world has endangered many food-fish species, as well as the oceans themselves. Over-fishing and “by-catch” have resulted in the near extinction of many species, and careless fishing, farming practices, and techniques jeopardize the delicate undersea environments as well.

In an effort to help alleviate this concern, Monterey Bay Aquarium launched its Seafood Watch Program in 2001.To date, about 21 million “Seafood Watch” cards have been distributed and they are helping consumers make the safest choices when purchasing seafood to cook at home or while dining out.

Visit the aquarium or any of the restaurants listed here for a free West Coast Seafood Guide. There are guides for seven different U.S. regions. Join the hundreds of thousands of other people that have already downloaded the guide by going to www.seafoodwatch.org and finding a guide for your specific area. You’ll be helping to protect the world’s oceans by choosing abundant, well-managed food-fish that are caught or farmed in environmentally friendly ways.
