The fresh catches from Monterey Bay are pleasures of visiting the area — but consider this before your order.
Well-publicized health benefits and increasing demand for seafood throughout the world is endangering many food-fish species, as well as the oceans themselves. Over fishing and “by-catch” have resulted in the near extinction of many species, and careless fishing and farming practices and techniques jeopardize the undersea environments as well.
In an effort to help alleviate this concern, Monterey Bay Aquarium launched its Seafood Watch Program, which offers a wallet-size “Seafood Watch” card to help consumers make the safest choices when purchasing seafood to cook at home or while dining out.
Visit the aquarium or any of the restaurants listed here for a free West Coast Seafood Guide. There are guides for seven different U.S. regions. Download a guide for your specific area from www.montereyaquarium.com and help protect the world’s oceans by selecting abundant, well-managed food-fish that are caught or farmed in environmentally friendly ways. And spread the word!
