If you’re like most people, you can think of 1,000 things to do while waiting at the airport: Check e-mail, surf the Internet, mail a letter, etc. Relax, you’re in Houston.

“Business and high-tech travelers are a treasured group for the Houston Airport System,” says Marlene McClinton, spokesperson for the airports. “We offer many amenities and services to meet the needs of busy travelers.”

Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU) airports offer wireless Internet access, or Wi-Fi. From your laptop, you can launch your Internet browser, and the Houston Airport System’s portal page will appear. It provides realtime flight and other information at no cost, and you can log on to the Internet for a nominal fee. (For those without wireless capabilities, most airport pay phones are equipped with data ports.)

You can also check flight information using your mobile device’s Web browser. Visit http://wap.fly2houston.com, and follow the on-screen instructions. If your cell phone battery runs down, the airport has you covered. Charging kiosks for mobile phones and PDAs have been installed at IAH and HOU. Find the plug that fits your device, swipe your credit card, and relax for 30 minutes while your battery refreshes. Of course, if you’ve brought your own plug for your laptop, phone, or MP3 player, feel free to use one of the many conveniently located power outlets. At IAH, there are 13 kiosks in Terminal C, eight in Terminal A, five each at Terminals B and D, but none yet at Terminal E. Hobby has two kiosks along the walkway leading to the gates (as you enter the concourse), with more in the works.

If you need an office away from the office, head to the new IAH Business Center in Terminal A South. Open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the center offers fax services, copying, printing, and even notary services. For info or to make special arrangements, e-mail the center at IAHBusCt@cityofhouston.net.
