Great Restaurant

Sullivan's Steakhouse is named after the extraordinary 19th century bare-knuckle boxer John L. Sullivan, who won a 75-round, two-hour fight and was called "the best of the best." The restaurant lives up to its name.

Located on Westheimer Street near the Galleria (just look for the friendly martini sign), Sullivan's specializes in steak, but proudly serves a range of other dishes. Favorites include fresh seafood and live Maine lobster, with a prime rib special on Sundays and an "All You Can Eat" stone crab claw feast on Mondays. The menu tempts discriminating palates with creative renditions of rib eye and filet mignon. Upon ordering, diners immediately plan return visits to sample halibut with lemon caper sauce, Tequila lime shrimp and other delicacies. The lunch menu unblushingly promises "the best burger in town."

I started my dining adventure at Sullivan's pleased with hot, homemade bread and an iceberg wedge with Sullivan's signature blue cheese dressing and diced tomatoes. I ordered the small New York strip and was delighted with a more than generous portion of meat seasoned to perfection and cooked exactly to my specifications. My choices for side dishes included creamed spinach, au gratin potatoes and onion rings, but I opted for the savory broccoli dish with hollandaise sauce knowing dessert at Sullivan’s is another study in excellence.

Sullivan's recently received a well-deserved Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine for its array of wines from outstanding wineries around the world, including Napa Valley, Chile and Australia. The mixed drinks list is equally exciting, including martinis such as the Iced Tini (a citrus blend) and the Knockout (a delicious pineapple) as well as an impressive array of port and sherry.

Ready to go yet? Your evening has barely begun! In addition to the restaurant, Sullivan's nightlife sizzles. This swanky evening hot spot offers a lively piano bar that stays open through the night and its famous "Ringside" Bar with local bands Wednesday through Saturday nights into the wee hours. If you are looking for the place to be seen and make connections, look no farther. And in case that's not enough, Sullivan's even has choice cigars on the menu and a smoking room to enjoy that pleasure.

The signature dessert — soufflé — outdid even the steaks. This little piece of heaven is made to order, so give it time. You won’t regret it. Personally, I intend to return for the famous Bananas Foster Bread Pudding very soon.

General Sam Houston, the city’s heroic namesake, was the first president of the Republic of Texas. Houston, the city, was the first word spoken from the surface of the moon and the first to build an air-conditioned sports stadium. Welcome! »
