Go For The History

Begin at Mesilla Plaza, the heart of village life for a century and a historical landmark since 1982. The stately Basilica of San Albino, one of the region's oldest churches, presides over the plaza's north side. Venture to the Gadsden Museum to learn how the city became part of the United States and see the original jail cell doors that once held Billy the Kid. If your visit allows, see an indie flick at the Fountain Theatre, the region's oldest movie house dating to the 1870s. mesillanm.gov, gadsdenmuseummesilla.com, mesillavalleyfilm.org

Stay For The Charm

It may be a small town (just 6.7 square miles), but it's packed with tradition and cultural charm. Mesilla Plaza comes alive with colorful seasonal festivities, including Cinco de Mayo in the spring, Día de Los Muertos in the fall, and Luminarias on the Plaza on Christmas Eve. The Old Mesilla Farmers and Crafts Market, with a bounty of produce and local crafts, takes place Fridays and Sundays year-round on the plaza. Branch out from the plaza to explore historic and savory restaurants, captivating galleries, and tastes of local pecans, wine, and beer. A mile and a half from town, stroll the scenic nature trails along the Rio Grande at Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park. oldmesilla.org, mesillanm.gov, nmparks.com

Know Before You Go

Heard of Hatch chile? It hails from Hatch, New Mexico, the chile capital of the world set nearly 40 miles northwest of Las Cruces and Mesilla. Cruise through any time to enjoy tastes of locally grown red and green, or join the town's spicy annual Hatch Chile Festival held Labor Day Weekend. villageofhatch.org
