Ten years ago, the closest remedy to curing El Paso’s physician shortage was to build a four-year medical school in the city. Today, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine — El Paso’s medical school — is training its first generation of medical students — our prescription for the future. Since 1973, it has been the objective of TTUHSC to provide quality medical education, address problems of healthcare delivery in rural areas, and develop programs throughout West Texas emphasizing the importance of primary healthcare. The mission continues to expand in the area of prevention and research by establishing four centers of excellence: Infectious Disease, Cancer Research, Neuroscience, and Diabetes/ Obesity.
